CCHSA's Adriana Angarita Fonseca was nominated as being within the top 5% of doctoral students for participation in the CIHR Research Poster Presentation. Adriana is a PhD candidate in the Department of Community Health & Epidemiology supervised by Dr. Catherine Trask and Dr. Brenna Bath. As part of the award, CIHR has selected her to receive an amount of up to $1,000.00 to reimburse her travel/accommodations expenses to attend the Canadian Student Health Research Forum (June 12-15, 2018 in Winnipeg), where she will be presenting the poster entitled, “Chronic Back Disorders in Canadian adults: Results of the 2007-2014 Canadian Community Health Survey.”
Dr. Catherine Trask has been awarded an additional 5-year term as Canada Research Chair in Ergonomics and Musculoskeletal Health. This chair will support ongoing work in the CCHSA Ergonomics Lab focusing on work-related musculoskeletal disorders in agriculture.
Congratulations to Dr. Oluwafemi Oluwole – Postdoctoral fellow at the CCHSA - for his winning paper in the category of Social and Population Health during the 2018 Life and Health Sciences Research Expo (formerly the Life and Health Sciences Research Day). His paper titled “Asthma diagnosis among children along an urban-rural gradient” was published in the Journal of Asthma in February 2018. He wrote this paper with Dr. Lawson (Oluwafemi’s Ph.D. academic supervisor) and co-authors (Drs. Rennie, Senthilselvan, Dyck, Adamko and Mrs. Afanaseiva). Congratulations again to Dr. Oluwafemi Oluwole and his co-authors for the excellent performance.

Muhammad's thesis in the Department of Community Health and Epidemiology was titled, "Trunk posture exposure as a risk factor for low back disorders in farmers". In it he investigated the issue of low back disorder among farmers using a systematic review and a field-based exposure assessment. Muhammad will work with supervisors Brenna Bath and Catherine Trask to publish this work in ergonomics and agricultural health journals. Muhammad's official graduation will be in June 2018. Researchers with the Canadian Centre for Health and Safety in Agriculture equipped saddles with sensors to monitor vibration and shock rates. They used the data to figure out how at risk horseback riding can be for back pain.
University of Saskatchewan researcher Behzad Bashiri stands beside a tractor simulator at the Canadian Centre for Health and Safety in Agriculture. Bashiri constructed the simulator to monitor physical and mental stresses on farm machinery operators.
